Providing the right heating for your property makes it a comfortable place to live or pleasant place to work, especially on those cold, windy days.   So, don't leave it until you feel the cold to consider your heating system as by then it might be too late to do anything about it quickly and you could end up with cold water and no heating!

And, sometimes it's not about installing a new boiler or heating system, it's about maintaining your existing system to prevent unwanted problems.
Installing a new heating system...
Deciding on what the right heating system is for your property can be a time consuming and complex task, and there are many different types available, but at Pike's Plumbing & Heating we only use what we believe are the best for efficiency - Worcester Bosch.

It's absolutely essential that you acquire not just the right boiler to provide sufficient water for your heating system and hot water, but the right radiators to provide the heat you need for each room. Radiators today are not just something that deliver the heat you need, but something that looks good in your room setting.

It's not just a gas boiler...
There are basically three mail types of gas boiler - Combination (Combi), Conventional and System.  Here's a little about the difference between them, but if you'd like to know more just give us a call.

Combi Boiler
Combi boilers provide instant heat and hot water for your home and there's no need for you to worry about the space for hot or cold water tanks, they run straight from the mains. When you turn on that tap or heating system the combi-boiler fires up and provides instant hot water for you, saving on energy too by only heating the water when you need it. The other benefit of a combi boiler is that it's just one appliance, therefore both the service and running costs are reduced.

So, a combi boiler sounds a great option - but here's the but. If you're going to have more than perhaps 2 bathrooms or showers, you could see a drop in water pressure when they are all in use. Even the biggest of combi boilers will not cope if the draw on the system is more than around 2 full pelt taps at a time.

Conventional Boiler
This type of boiler has today really been replaced by the combi boiler, mostly because of the storage tanks that they require for both the hot and cold water.

System Boiler
The system boiler is probably the most up-to-date available for your home. A system boiler works on the principle of heating and storing hot water for your heating, taps and other appliances making it available as and when required. As there is always stored hot water available, it is less likely to cause a pressure problem if you have more than one bathroom as you might find with a combi boiler, and there's less components to worry about than with a conventional boiler as it removes the need for tanks and cisterns.

Cleaning your old heating systems...

If you've had a heating system installed for a few years or you've just installed a new boiler, you should really consider power flushing the system (pipes, radiators).

Power flushing ensures that any debris in the system like silt, sludge or calcium build-up, does not effect a new boiler and any working components like pumps and valves are kept clear prolong the life of the whole system and helping to prevent any future problems. In fact, many boiler manufacturers today ask for a Power Flush as part of the new boiler installation and in some cases if it is not done, the warranty will be invalidated.

Power flushing equipment connects to your central heating and cleans the whole system without the need to remove your radiators, and it can be done relatively easily by a trained engineer with the right equipment.
But, if you're looking to replace your heating system or install one in your new home, you have a lot of decisions to make before you spend what could possibly be thousands of pounds, so make sure you find out everything you can before you make that decision.
